The Cape Cod house style was first built by English colonists in the 1600s who adapted British hall-and-parlor construction to the severe New England climate. The name was coined by Reverend Timothy Dwight IV, president of Yale, during an 1800 visit to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The original design featured a steeply pitched roof to shed snow and rain, a large central chimney for efficient heating, low ceilings to conserve warmth, and small multi-pane windows to resist wind. The style experienced a massive revival in the 1930s-1950s when architect Royal Barry Wills modernized the design for suburban development, making it one of America's most popular post-war housing types. The Cape Cod is categorized as full Cape (symmetrical with two windows flanking the door on each side), three-quarter Cape (door off-center with two windows on one side and one on the other), or half Cape (door at one end with two windows on one side).

Cape Cod interiors emphasize warmth, simplicity, and nautical charm. The color palette draws from the New England coast — crisp whites, soft blues, sandy beiges, weathered grays, and seafoam greens.
